A set of false-embroidered cavalry hat insignia, as privately purchased and worn by officers, by the occasional enlisted man wanting to cut a more dashing figure, and various militia units. See Campbell & O’Donnell p.194ff, particularly Figs. 454-457. They classify it as “Militia, Dragoon, Cavalry” with broad dating of variations as 1851-1865, noting their similarity to the embroidered dragoon officer insignia of the 1851 regulations as illustrated by Horstmann. Made of gilt, die-struck brass and fitted with four small fastening loops on the reverse and measuring 3 3/8 inches across, this follows the 1850/51 pattern for dragoons with the two sabers crossing low on the scabbards, creating uneven upper and lower angles. These are stamped with ridges to imitate rows of bullion embroidery and when used by officers were less expensive and more robust than embroidered bullion, and easier to keep bright by simple polishing once the gilt finish wore off.

They show up on prewar militia shakos with some early examples silvered as the branch of service metal color for dragoons, but they continued in use even after the introduction of the 1858 pattern, the swords crossing at the middle, and the conversion of dragoons, and mounted rifles, to cavalry as well, and the change to gold from silver. This has all four brass fastening loops in place on the reverse and shows just minor, pleasing age toning on the face. The reverse shows some dark stains on the brass and some oxidation of the solder securing the fastening loops.  [sr] [ph:L]
