See Campbell & O’Donnell, American Military Headgear Insignia p.119ff. for the development and variations of this insignia. Stamped rolled brass crossed cannon hat insignia for artillery measuring 3 3/8 inches wide. Fitted with two fastening loops on the reverse. Pleasing age toning giving a bronze effect with a little verdigris at center obverse and in recesses of reverse. No bends or breaks. This insignia was authorized in 1833 and issued in 1834 for wear on the dress shako, with officer’s employing a gilt finish and enlisted men simply polishing the brass. The cannon barrels are an early style, the raised curving lines at center of the upper tube representing raised handles, often in the form of dolphins. This pattern was widely adopted by militia artillery units and was US regulation until 1851 when the cannon barrels became more slender and were sometimes crossed lower down, with the official enlisted man’s 1858 pattern using slender barrels crossed in the middle, though early patterns continued in use.
