This is a leather sling designed for use with M1842 smoothbore muskets.
The sling has a fixed leather loop at one end and a brass wire hook on the other, which is retained by flap sewn down. The hook engaged one of holes along the length of the sling, which allowed the length to be adjusted. There is also a sliding leather loop remaining. The sling is approximately 77” long overall including the brass hook, and 1.2” wide.
This original musket sling is in lightly used condition. Brown leather. Unmarked. There are “folds” where this wrapped around swivels when it was once mounted on a musket. Otherwise, the leather remains soft and supple with no weak spots.
This sling could easily be installed on a musket to enhance the display of the weapon. [jet] [ph:L]
