This cartridge box sling measures 68” overall and is made with separate billets sewn to each end for the buckles of a cartridge box. The belt itself is 59” long and 2” wide, with the billets 5 7/8” long, overlapping the belt for the stitching, and 7/8” wide, each pierced with four holes. The leather is flexible and the stitching of the billets is tight. There are no breaks tears. The belt has not been pierced for a plate. The sling preserves most of its original thin white color though there is some minor soiling and a water stain on one tip of the belt extending about four inches up the belt that would be concealed on the back of a cartridge and the very light brown edge of the stain is likely from a cartridge box it was on.
The overall dimensions and construction with separate billets would indicate it is not U.S. federal issue, but we cannot narrow it down more. It would likely fit any cartridge box of the period that is set up for a shoulder sling. [sr] [ph:L]
