The palmer brace system (harness or suspender-like straps) was used to attach the haversack, clothing bag and canteen to the soldier's back believing the brace would help with weight distribution. It was cumbersome and quickly fell out of solider favor and was discontinued.

The complete model 1874 Palmer brace system would have included the waste belt, a bayonet, cartridge boxes, the harness, a haversack, the clothing bag, and a canteen.

Offered here is the “brace” or “harness.” Browned bridle leather with components sewn and/or riveted as needed. Leather remains soft and pliable with some surface crazing. There is also remnants of white residue from polish or preservative but it is not “waxy” to the touch.

Central “pad” is stamped “ROCK ISLAND / ARSENAL”. From there two narrow straps hang down; complete and unbroken. Four wider straps heading the opposite direction are again connected at their far ends with additional narrow, buckled straps extending from them. All pieces are complete and unbroken. All brass rings and buckles are present.

Inspector’s initials stamped on strap ends on front side. On the back, the number “12” is stenciled on one strap and a large “A” is cut onto the central “pad”.

Nice condition Indian War-era piece. [jet][ph:L]
