This is an original Civil War regulation horse tail crupper. This is the piece that attached to the back of the saddle and was designed to hold the horse tail up. This one is nice and complete, with no leather loss or separation and both original iron buckles intact. These iron buckles let us know that it was designed for an enlisted man because the officer’s version had brass buckles. It is marked with a prominent inspector’s oval Ordnance Department stamp.
An excellent and essential piece of Civil War equestrian gear, ready for display. [cm][ph:L]
