Designed to enable the cavalryman to carry the saber suspended from a single ring on the belt and be able to detach it and quickly get it out of the way to fight on foot, or attach it to a ring on the saddle, the 1885 saber attachment was based on one patented by Jeb Stuart in 1859 while still a U.S. Army officer. Stuart’s version included a flat spring closure that would prevent its loss from the belt and was well regarded, but saw limited use in the Civil War,  the government making only 500 before wartime production concentrated on the known, older pattern, though it was revived in time for limited use on the Mann’s cavalry accoutrements of 1864, and thus survived into the early Indian Wars. The 1874 equipment board passed up the chance to adopt it and went back to the old use of two slings hanging from the belt at different points, though using sliding brass loops. Only in 1884 was Stuart’s original idea revived, with the spring eliminated, but the hook lengthened to avoid it accidentally slipping out of the carrying ring on the M1885 cavalry belt, with actual production starting in 1886.

This is an excellent example, likely unissued, with the leather showing strong brown color and finish with no cracking or flaking, only few slight edge rubs, the rivets securing each sling to the plate intact, as are the sliding loop tighteners and double-headed fastening studs at the ends. The rivets show some age stains and thin verdigris. The brass plate and hook show a medium patina with small age stains. The reverse of the hook shows a sharp R.I.A. Rock Island Arsenal stamp the tip of the short sling shows a crisp set of inspector’s initials.

This would make a nice addition to a display of U.S cavalry accoutrements.  [sr] [ph:L]
