This is a leather shoulder sling designed for use with the Allin Conversion rifles. The Springfield Model 1866 was a rifle made by the Springfield Armory between 1866 and 1873 featuring the Allin-designed trapdoor breech-loading mechanism. Originally developed as a means of converting rifle muskets to breechloaders, the Allin modification ultimately became the basis for the definitive Springfield Model 1873, the first breech-loading rifle adopted by the United States.
This sling was lengthened by sewing two Civil War-era musket slings together. It has a fixed leather loop sewn to one end and a brass hook on the other, which is mounted under a sewn down flap. The hook engaged one of holes along the length of the sling, which allowed the length to be adjusted. The sling is approximately 63” long overall including the brass hook, and 1.2” wide.
This musket sling is in good but well-worn condition. Black leather with tooled edges; two sets of METZGER maker’s stamps and W.H. JONES sub-inspector’s stamps. Painted in yellow on the inside is “E.A. Giles No. 15”. There is an older pen & ink name also written inside but it is unreadable. There are two E.A. Giles who enlisted in the infantry during the Civil War but there is no way to positively connect either to this sling.
Leather is soft and pliable, but has two weak spots where it was mounted on musket sling swivels. It could be (carefully) put onto a musket or rifle again. [jet] [ph:L]
