A Confederate canvas and leather gunsling measuring 1-1/4” wide and 36” long overall, including a doubled iron wire hook sewn in one end. The other end has a brown leather flat loop sewn onto it, through which the sling is to pass after having been fed through one of the sling swivels. The end with the hook is then passed through the other swivel and doubled back to fasten the hook through one of several holes punched in a narrow brown leather strip sewn to the body of the sling to give a firm surface, permitting the length to be adjusted, with a loose sliding leather loop, also flat and brown leather, to act as a tightener and cinch that end tight.

This is in very good condition. The leather is dark brown, showing some minor rubs and finish loss, and the sliding loop having been resewn in what looks like an old, functional repair. Neither the canvas nor the leather has any holes or tears. The canvas shows as a tan, with small, dark brown stains and shows some loose threads on the folded end holding the hook, which shows some thin, brown rust, but is secure. This has never had any oil, leather polish, dressing or preservatives applied to it.

The relatively short length, 36” versus the 46” of the US M1850 gun sling, suggests this may have been intended for a carbine, short rifle or musketoon. Canvas also appears as a functional leather substitute in Confederate belts, cap pouches and even some cartridge boxes where black paint was used to waterproof and make it match other gear.  [sr][ph:m]
