Made of black bridle leather and measuring 7-inches overall, this frog would hold a bayonet or sword scabbard for wear on a waist belt. This is entirely sewn, with no rivets, and the pocket has a 2-inch wide opening that has short vertical slit and round opening for use with a sword/saber bayonet scabbard using a round fastening stud on the throat or possibly for the scabbard of an NCO or musician sword that used a narrow brass hook. Those swords by regulation were carried on shoulder belts, but period photographs show they were sometimes carried on the waist belt.
The early 1855 riflemen’s belts featured an integral frog for the bayonet scabbard, which also used a slotted bar on the throat that required a rectangular slit in the frog and a separate tab to lock it in place. With more general issue of arms taking saber bayonets to troops wearing the conventional infantry belt some separate frog was necessary since sword/saber bayonet scabbards were not fitted with a belt loop as were the those for socket bayonets.
This is very good example with good color, just minor crackling to the finish, and tight seams, that would be appropriate for display with any of the Civil War rifles carrying a saber bayonet. [sr] [ph:m]
