This Civil War era original leather flag pole carry sling is in complete, very good condition. Made of finely finished black leather, folded on the reverse. Stitched with a meandering elliptical pattern with intertwined diamonds. The two-piece sling was to be worn around the neck and over each shoulder. Each side is fastened with a single brass buckle. The shoulder sections end in a heart shaped leather pad holding a tapered leather cup. This held the end of the flag pole. The bottom of the cup being stitched with a leather plug, similar to Civil War period holsters. Overall, very good condition with no rips or tears in the leather. The only scuffed sections being along each side of the straps at the junction of the pad. This area likely seeing the most wear during usage.
Used during parades and various official ceremonies to carry the flag. In operation, the flag pole would rest in the cup while the marcher held the mid part of the pole. No makers marks observed. A very well-made item that could be a one-of-a-kind leather makers product. [stp] [ph:L]
