Model 1858 McClellan Farrier’s saddle bags consisted of two deep leather pouches connected by a wide leather yoke or seat that draped over the rear of the saddle. They were generally produced in black or russet leather. These farrier's saddle bags were designed strictly to hold horse-care tools and horseshoeing supplies rather than personal gear.
Leather is slightly stiff in places; the smaller bag flap, under side of the larger bag, and the yoke show moderate crazing. Each pouch flap retains long closure strap that slides through loop to keep closed. The larger bag is in overall very good and supple condition. The leather lacing is present on the inside. The smaller horseshoe sized bag has an inner pocket. The cross strap (or yoke) that connects the bags is stamped “U.S” and is split to fit over the cantle.
This item would be a great addition to a cavalry collection. Saddlebags had a wide variety of uses by cavalry troopers during and after the Civil War. [jet][ph:L]
