A scarce pre-Civil War U.S. Dragoon horseshoe pouch of the type carried with the Model 1847 Grimsley saddle. The Grimsley horse equipments, adopted following the December 1847 report of the Board of Officers and named for St. Louis saddler Thornton Grimsley, provided iron rings and staples at the cantle ends of the side bars for attaching the shoe pouch and crupper. The pouch held spare shoes for the trooper's mount and remained part of the dragoon kit through the 1850s, until the Grimsley equipments gave way to the McClellan pattern of 1859. Surviving dragoon-era horseshoe pouches are noted in several minor variations, chiefly in the shape of the rear buckle chape and the type of buckle used — iron, brass, brass-faced, horseshoe-shaped and roller. Few appear to have survived the hard service of the period, and they are seldom offered.

Black bridle leather, horseshoe-shaped body with the welted edge seam hand-stitched around the full perimeter. The outer flap is cut to a point at its lower edge and carries a sewn strap loop across its face. A closing strap is stitched at the point of the flap, punched for adjustment and secured to a brass buckle mounted on a sewn chape with keeper on the face of the pouch body beneath the flap. On the reverse, a five-sided reinforcing chape is sewn to the back of the body and carries the suspension strap with its iron roller buckle, by which the pouch was attached to the saddle.

Leather shows overall crazing, scuffing and surface wear consistent with age, with a crack to the outer flap near its point. Closing strap is intact, its end turned. Brass buckle with light verdigris. An old tape repair is present on the reverse where the suspension strap joins the rear chape; the flesh side of the strap is worn at that point. Suitable for display; no weight should be placed on the suspension strap.
