Sometimes referred to as the Hagner pattern M1872 US belt plate, this sturdy, cast brass rectangular belt plate with integral belt loop and tongue was intended to go with a brace system requiring brass loops for shoulder straps integrated into the belt. The plate was modified for the Palmer brace system in 1874 by the addition of integral loops cast as part of the hasp and the belt plate. That system was abandoned in 1878 and in the meantime the simpler M1872 plate continued on in wide use. Even after it was replaced for field use about 1880 it was still worn for garrison duty and full dress until 1902 making it a key Indian War and Spanish-American War plate for the collector.
This is a very good example of the plate with nice definition to the US, edges, border, and stippled ground, showing undisturbed, mellow age tones, and on its original belt. The belt has overall crackling to the finish from age and flexing and small bits of finish loss with old polish, but no major flaked areas. The hasp is firmly affixed with two rivets. The brass wire adjusting hook is firmly in place. [sr][ph:L]
