A very good example of a ca. 1895-1910 ornate belt plate with inner raised border and a “5” flanked by “VC” on a stippled ground. The plate is O’Donnell and Campbell Plate 876 and identified by them as for the Veterans Corps of the 5th Maryland National Guard. This is on its original, officer’s quality belt having two loops for attachment of sword slings through brass rings, the forward loop sewn in place and the rear loop sliding. The belt is solid, though showing a little wrinkling and weakness just to the left of the plate. Our cursory research shows this was a four-company unit attached to the “Dandy Fifth” regiment of Maryland Infantry National Guard based in Baltimore. The belt plate is rather stylish in the sinuous lines of the inner border. We don’t know whether to call it art nouveau, but it certainly reflects the period. [sr][ph:L]
