This is a very nice Civil War artilleryman’s waist belt and buckle with a frog for the 1832 short artillery sword that shows actual use.

The cast brass eagle buckle has a three-piece applied German silver wreath and has the narrow ½ inch wide hook on back. The detail on the eagle remains generally good but shows moderate wear to raised points, especially shield, eagle head, and ribbon. The belt plate is stamped “US / ALLEGHENY / ARSENAL” on the back.

Bridle leather waist belt is 1.75” wide with brass keeper stitched to one end, a brass adjuster hook on the other, and the sword-frog assembly attached by two brass square “rings” in the left hip area. Condition of the leather is very good showing some soiling and wear from use.

The leather frog for the 1832 short artillery sword is suspended by two straps. The “pocket” of the frog is stretched to the shape of the sword scabbard denoting field use. Most of the stitching on the frog is good and unbroken, only the upper part of one strap showing an old field repair.

From the Texas Civil War Museum collection.  [jet][ph:L]
