A baldric is a belt worn over one shoulder that is typically used to carry a weapon or other implement such as a drum. The word may also refer to any belt in general, but this usage is poetic or archaic. Collectors today refer to them as cross belts when used in conjunction with a cartridge box or just as an over the shoulder belt. This our offered buff "over the shoulder belt" could actually be one made for the bayonet rather than one made after 1840 for the musician's sword. The Buff (processed and whitened buffalo hide not to be mistaken for American bison) belt is 2 inches wide and this is a touch narrower than the rig for the musician's and Non-commissioned officer's swords seen after 1840. The blackening was applied closer to the Civil War and at that time it would certainly have been re-purposed to hold the musician's sword. Another clue that this may be originally designed for the bayonet is the circular stamped brass eagle buckle. This is lead filled on the back and there are 3 iron wire hooks. All we have seen prior to this one are folded to strengthen them. On this example, only the adjustment hook is folded while the 2 fastening wires are not, this we believe is a very early example of the 1829 plate and it has never been off this particular baldric.
The condition is excellent with a little age stiffening to the buff leather. There are no tears, and it is actually wearable. The 2 1/2-inch diameter eagle buckle has a fine rich patina and is flawless. As an original 1829 rig in its white buff color, it is very rare pre-dating the US Mexican war and compatible for the US Model 1816 musket bayonet (be aware the blackening can be removed safely by a clever restorer). It is what US Infantry would have worn in the early Seminole Wars in Florida. As it was blackened it is also compatible for a Civil War display in which case it needs the 1840 musician's sword to complete it. [pe] [ph:L]
