This set of accoutrements includes everything needed for the infantryman to operate his rifle but the cap box.  The belt features a brass keeper with an appropriate hook-backed US plate – a stark improvement in functionality over the previous pattern belt and plate. An oval inspection stamp is noted near the keeper, but is largely illegible.  The leather is dry and crazed but pliable and somewhat supple, with edge cracking in areas and a near through tear close to the plate (still attached by a 0.25” section of untorn leather).

Attached by its backing belt loops is a Pattern 1864 Cartridge Box with embossed US plate style insignia and rivet-reinforced closing tab. A sub-inspector stamp on the inner flap reads “F. A. SNIFFEN / US ORD DEPT / SUB INSPECTOR”.  No sling is included and a lack of wear on the reverse of the box suggests it has only been mounted directly to a belt.  The box is complete, with all associated accessories and features still present, save for the interior tins.  The outer flap shows crazing and outer finished layer loss in areas.  All stitching and rivets appear to be secure and complete.

Also attached is a Pattern 1863 Scabbard with a 7-rivet reinforced belt loop and single rivet reinforced collar.  The scabbard has split along the rear seam but retains its brass finial tip.  A matching oval inspection mark is noted between rivets on the outer face of the belt loop.  The m1855 socket bayonet is US stamped, characterized by a mixed finish of bright steel, areas of darkening, and small areas of surface rust.

As the war entered its final years, equipment of this type became a common sight among enlisted men of the US Armies.  This set is a perfect way to collect the important and under-appreciated later patterned gear in one swoop.  [cm][ph:L]
