Bridle leather sword belt in good condition. The exterior leather surfaces show moderate surface crazing with scattered patches of flaking and loss. The leather belt is strong and supple with no weak spots. The belt is stamped “MADE BY / J.I. PITMAN”.
There is no shoulder strap (Sam Brown belt) and there never was one on this belt. Both of the original sword traces (hangers) are present. All hardware is present as well, including snap-swivel hooks on the hangers. The shorter strap has one small tear on the edge.
The belt plate is the Pattern 1851 NCO plate with applied German silver wreath. There are no bench numbers stamped on the keeper or plate.
This is a well-used, but solid example of a Civil War mounted artillery sword belt rig. [jet] [ph:L]
