This belt rig is constructed of strong buff leather dyed black on the exterior per 1851 Army Regulations and it retains the original tan or buff color on the belt interior. Saber belt is complete with its brass rectangular eagle waist belt plate with matching keeper sewn in place, (non-numbered), brass carry hook, both saber straps with brass drops, and even has its original buff shoulder strap, often missing. No maker's stamp or government inspector stamps are visible. Leather saber rig has aged and the dye is a black to brown faded color. Leather belt is very strong, somewhat dry, yet supple with no torn, weak, or stressed areas.

Belt measures approximately 35.5” in length as it is currently fashioned and 1.75” in width. Shoulder strap attachment measures approximately 35.5”.

The m1851 regulation sword belt was issued to enlisted cavalry before and during the Civil War, and could be seen on enlisted artillerymen and non-commissioned officers under specific circumstances that required the hanging and wearing of a sword.  [cm][ph:L]
