This non-excavated Federal belt plate is of the regulation 1839 pattern. Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass method, the brass accoutrement’s face shows a clear “US”. Face shows a nice even chocolate tone. One small surface dent near the tongue. Lead filled back retains 100% of lead fill. No maker’s mark. This is the style with brass “arrow” hooks. All three hooks remain solid. Green verdigris around the arrows and on the leather, indicating they have been mated for a long time. The lead surface also shows extended contact with the leather.
Plate is attached to a regulation bridle leather enlisted man’s waist belt. The belt measures approximately 41” long by 2” wide. End of belt opposite the plate has a brass “keeper” attached with verdigris present. Belt leather shows heavy surface wear. Almost all of the black polished finished surface has worn away. The edges are all strong with no rips or tears. Soft and supple leather.
A fine Civil War waist belt. [stp][ph:L]
