This is the waistbelt designed by Col. William Mann for use with his patent infantry accoutrements.
Mann’s system was meant to balance and more evenly distribute the weight of the accoutrements, transferring it from the waist to the shoulders. He developed different sets of gear cavalry and infantry, with some variations on each. The infantry set placed the cartridge box at the soldier’s belly. Mann’s set was supported by series of straps connecting belt, cartridge box, and knapsack. The original buckle for Mann’s waist belt was a simple brass hook set (similar to the hooks set into the lead of typical US belt plates).
This belt is of the Mann’s patent style, only being modified to use a M1851 style rectangular buckle with keeper (no buckle or keeper remains). The belt leather is the usual 1.75” wide and is 33” long as set. However, the simple Mann’s buckle “hooks” were discarded, with both ends of the belt modified to accept the rectangular 1851 style plate. One end shows three lines of stitch holes where a brass “keeper” was attached. The other end had a brass adjuster hook added and is “doubled” back upon itself to accept a floating “eagle sword belt plate”. A floating belt loop remains in place. Leather remains good and supple with light crazing. The two original brass chapes (of Mann’s patent) are firmly riveted in place and both have their upper and lower D-rings.
An interesting patented Civil War belt, showing an interesting soldier modification. [jet][ph:L]
