The cartridge box is an example of the "Pattern 1861” infantry cartridge box. Outer flap has a smooth surface with tooled edge. Oval “US” box plate is secured to the face of the box with leather thong. Brass has nice even patina. Closing tab is sewn to underside of outer flap and is well worn by remains unbroken. The inner flap has a faint New York maker’s stamp. This flap covers two cartridge tins that remain (top dividers missing). This inner flap retains both “ears”. The implement pouch is complete, showing light wear. Stitching is tight and unbroken. Belt straps are sewn and riveted.  Brass finial on the bottom.  Iron buckles were sewn only; both remain tightly attached.

The percussion cap pouch shows similar smooth surface as cartridge box. This pattern has the closing tab as a continuation of the outer flap. This latch tab is unbroken. No visible markings. The interior flap has both “ears” firmly sewn in place. No fleece, but nipple pick remains. Bottom has brass finial. Both narrow belt loops remain in place on back and are stitched in place. All stitching remains strong and intact.

Both of the above pieces remain on a federal regulation bridle leather enlistedman’s waist belt. The belt measures approximately 37” long by 1.75” wide. The oval brass buckle is the regulation 1839 pattern. The face shows a clear “US” with only a few small dings and has a nice mellow patina matching that of the cartridge box plate. Back retains 100% of lead fill with brass “arrow” hooks; all three hooks remain.
