The cartridge box is an example of the "Pattern 1861” infantry cartridge box. Outer flap is in good condition with some surface crazing and shows a partial tooled edge. Flap is stamped “US” below brass plate and single line of stitching. The oval “US” box plate is secured to the face of the box with leather thong. Brass has nice light patina. Closing tab is sewn to underside of outer flap and display only light wear; it remains unbroken. The inner flap is unmarked. This flap covers two cartridge tins that remain. This inner flap retains both “ears”. The implement pouch is complete, showing little wear. Stitching is tight and unbroken. Sides of the box are stamped “C.S. STORMS / MAKER N.Y.” Belt straps are sewn and riveted. Brass finial on the bottom. One of the two original iron buckles remains (the other loose roller buckle is inside the cap pouch).
The percussion cap pouch shows similar dry and crazed leather as the cartridge box. This pattern has the closing tab as a continuation of the outer flap. This latch tab is unbroken. “US” stamped on outer flap. The interior flap has both “ears” firmly sewn in place and also has “STORMS” maker stamp. No fleece, but nipple pick remains. Bottom has brass finial. Both narrow belt loops remain in place on back and are stitched and riveted in place. All stitching remains strong and intact.
Model 1855 bayonet and scabbard. Original black bridle leather scabbard is in nice condition with a good tight seam running up the back and only showing some wear on the frog. Brass scabbard tip tightly attached with four tacks. Arched leather frog has seven rivets and is attached to the scabbard by stitching and an additional rivet. Frog is faintly stamped with “WATERTOWN / ARSENAL” stamp. The bayonet itself is fine with strong “US” stamp. Blade is a dull gray tone with scattered spotting. The elbow and socket that have been exposed out of the scabbard have a weathered brown tone. Locking ring works fine.
All of the above pieces remain on a federal regulation bridle leather enlistedman’s waist belt. The belt measures approximately 39” long by 1.75” wide and matches condition of other leather. The oval brass buckle is the regulation 1839 pattern. The face shows a clear “US” with no dings or dents. Back retains 100% of lead fill with brass “arrow” hooks; all three hooks remain. An oval sub-inspector’s stamp is on one end of the belt.
A fine original set showing honest use. [jet][ph:L]

This musket is stamped “42. VA. REGT. PITTSYLVANIA” on the barrel, was later altered to percussion and then shortened for use in the civilian market. It is a scarce survivor from muskets delivered to Virginia by Jame Swan of Boston in January… (1000-241). Learn More »
