Dating from the Indian Wars of the 1870s and 1880s, this is the Model 1874 waistbelt plate. It is a heavy cast brass belt plate with “NJ” within an oval at the center and rounded corners. There is a belt loop on one edge and a hook on the back. Front is clean brass patina. Rear shows much use with dark spots and verdigris.
Accompanied by a waist belt, as used by the U.S. Army for the last decades of the 19th Century and beyond. It is of simple sturdy black leather construction, with a hook on the back that attaches to the end fitting on the other end. The belt could be used to suspend holsters, ammunition cartridges, and other field gear items for use in combat. Double stitched on the keeper end. Marked “ROCK ISLAND/ ARSENAL/ 1904/ H.E.K.” on the inside hook end.
It is offered in very good condition with no rips or tears. The belt is 1 7/8" wide, and measures approximately 35" from hook to clip, though it could probably be extended another few inches. There are also numerous size holes to make it smaller. An old note attached reads “US M1874 BELT/ AND BUCKLE. / CAST FOR NEW/ JERSEY MILITIA. / SCARCE”. [stp][ph:L]
