This scarce National Guard waist belt and plate set was worn by the state’s militia regiments in the years before 1881. The rectangular brass plate has canted corners and an applied, ornately scrolled “NG” monogram. An old collector’s tag still attached to the set records that this pattern was replaced by the Model 1881 script “SNY” plate for New York National Guard regiments. That short period of issue makes surviving examples, especially those still on their original belt, hard to find.

The belt is black leather with a decorative crease line along each edge. One end is fold fastened with a keeper around the rectangular brass plate.  The other end is folded tightly around a brass wire loop with sewing visible on the face and rear. The reverse of the plate shows its integral hook for engaging the loop.

Dimensions (approximate):

  • Overall length, plate to loop: 35"
  • Belt width: 2"
  • Plate: 3" wide × 2½" tall
  • Brass loop: approx. 2¼" × ½"

Condition: The plate has a pleasing, even, mellow brass patina that has never been polished. There is light wear to the high points of the scrollwork, and the applied monogram is solidly attached. A band of darker staining and old residue runs along the lower edge of the face. The leather is complete and remains flexible. Its surface finish shows overall crazing and a textured, crackled appearance typical of age. Wear is heaviest near the loop end, where the black finish has rubbed through to brown in places, and the edges show light scuffing. The stitching at the loop appears intact, and the keeper is present. Overall, this is a very good, honest, untouched set that displays well. [stp][ph:L]
