Overall, the leather on this box is soft and pliable.
The outer flap shows a moderate amount of surface finish loss but is solid. Latch tab is attached by single line stitching only, no rivet. Attached at center of the flap is a Pattern 1839 oval “US” plate still held by a leather thong.
Inner flap shows some light crazing and light to moderate surface finish loss. Both ears are present. Both tins are also present though one lacks a divider. Implement pocket is complete. The flap has lost half of the thread attaching it to the body of the box but the other half is holding well. Flap tab shows heavy surface wear.
Bottom of the box has both roller buckles and a pear-shaped finial. Reverse has both belt and sling loops.
Sling is attached and still retains the Patter 1826 eagle breast plate. Sling also shows a good bit of surface finish loss. At some point in the life of the sling it has been treated with a leather preservative as it is a bit greasy to the touch. [ad] [ph:L]
