The black leather box is in very good condition for its age. The exterior flap is large and meas. approx. 11.00 x 9.50 inches. The exterior surface is dyed black and is very smooth with no crackling or crazing. The bottom corners are rounded with a point at center. The latch tab which holds the flap closed is sewn to the underside of the flap.
Lifting the exterior flap reveals a brown leather surface stamped with a large oval mark that reads “BUYTEWEG. TE DELFT.” The bottom portion of the flap’s interior does show some crazing but the flap is strong and solid.
Inner flap is made of thin leather and is also dyed black on the top and left the natural brown underneath. Flap is held closed by passing a knotted leather strip, anchored to the body of the box, through a slit cut in the flap. One edge has two small horizontal separations.
Inside the box is a wood block with hollowed out sections to hold 24 cartridges.
The body of the box is in good condition. Again, the exposed leather has been dyed black but the surfaces do show light wear throughout. The face of the box has 3 implement pockets. The central one is the largest of the three meas. approx. 4.00 x 3.75. Next to it on one side is a small pocket with a large flap. The pocket meas. approx. 2.00 x 1.75 inches. Above this pocket the leather is carved with the number “2633.” The third pocket is more of a sewn leather slot approx. 2.25 inches long and in width it graduates downward from the top being 1.00 inch wide at the top and 0.75 inches at the bottom.
The bottom of the box has three roller buckles. The one at center is iron and holds the outer flap closed while the two on either side of it are made of brass and hold the sling in place. The body of the box has a piece of leather sewn over each edge which helps to hold the box together. One of these looks like a replacement but it is well done.
The white sling is made of buff leather and meas. approx. 2.50 inches wide. The sling is in excellent condition. It does have light surface dirt throughout but is very strong. [ad] [ph:L]
