This is a Model-1889 Navy cartridge box for the .38 caliber Colt Model 1889/1895 revolvers. The outer flap is embossed with “USN” in an oval and has a closing tab sewn and riveted to the lower edge. The tab is closed with a brass snap. Tab is complete and unbroken. Two side “ears” remain stitched to the outer flap. A wood block is inside and drilled for two "speed loaders” and six individual cartridges. Two thin belt loops are riveted to the back.

All leather remains in excellent condition.

The “speed loaders” this box was designed to hold were properly called the “New Cartridge Pack” for the Colt Model 1889 revolver. They were patented by Carl J. Ehbets of Hartford, Connecticut and manufactured by the Colt Firearms Company. These “Cartridge Packs” were the first successfully produced “speed loaders”. The Cartridge Pack consisted of a central wooden plug and a brass foil collar that secured the six cartridges around the plug.  Once the cartridges were loaded into the pistol’s cylinder, the plug and collar were simply discarded.[jet] [ph:L]
