Confederate cap boxes don’t get much better than this. This is not only in outstanding condition, it retains the fleece inside that was used to keep the percussion caps from being jostled out if the soldier did not bother latching it, still has the iron wire vent pick, used to clear the rifle’s vent of debris, still has its single, wide belt loop firmly in place on the rear, still has the separate latch tab firmly stitched to the outer flap, and the inner flap with both side ears. Best of all, it has its wonderful wood finial, instead of brass, iron, pewter or even lead, a fine tribute not only to the shortage of materials in the south, but resourcefulness in meeting needs with practical solutions.

The leather is excellent and the stitching is tight. The finish is excellent as well, showing just wrinkling from flexing on the latch tab outer flap and a couple of minor rubs. A white inventory or collection number is on the back, which is harmless and we have not attempted to remove it. It has not been treated with oil, polish or preservatives and should not be. This would be an outstanding addition to a Confederate display or accouterment collection. Even Federal cap boxes do not usually show up so nice.  [sr][ph:L]
