This is a M1874 “McKeever” cartridge box. Complete and original and in good overall condition. Black leather box “hinged” at the bottom with a brass rod. Leather closure tab fastens to brass finial on the top. Tab is complete and unbroken but has some loss of finish. “WATERVLIET ARSENAL” stamped on back end of tab. Two narrow belt loops sewn and riveted to the back. Oval “US” embossed on the front flap. Canvas loops to hold 10 .45-70 cartridges are sewn to each half (20 rounds total) for a trapdoor longarm. Stitching remains strong and tight. Black leather exterior shows some small areas of wear and crazing. Two small tears in leather on underside “hinge” area.
Box is fully loaded with cartridges. Most are headstamped “F 3 89”. A gun tool remains in its right-side compartment; marked “US MOD 1879”. A very nice, complete Indian Wars cartridge box. [jet] [ph:L]
