The pattern 1839 rifleman’s cartridge box was meant to be suspended from the waistbelt and was produced with vertical loops only on the reverse. This box shows signs of having been altered to use the shoulder sling like the musket cartridge box, but was then later returned to its original configuration.
The outer flap of the box has some light scattered crazing over its surface with moderate finish loss near the top and a smaller section along one side. Despite these, the leather is in nice pliable condition. Attached at center is the small Pattern 1839 oval US plate anchored by the correct leather thong. The curled, worn but complete latch tab is sewn to the underside of the flap by a single line of stitching. Latch is solid.
The interior flap has both ears and is faintly marked with the maker’s mark in an oval. The mark reads “STORMS N.Y. MAKER.” The tin is present on the inside. The tin is all one piece with five top compartments and two wide compartments at bottom. Implement pocket is also present with the proper latch tab. All is in good condition but does show some surface dirt and light wear on the leather.
The bottom of the box has a round brass finial while the back of the box has two vertical belt loops. The exterior leather on the body of the box shows light wear from rubbing and some surface dirt from age and storage.
Looking closely at the box one can see how it was once configured for use on a sling. Across the top of the back one can see three rivet holes where copper rivets were used to hold a strip of leather to form horizontal sling loops. Also, looking at the bottom of the box there are two small holes, one on each side of the brass finial, where roller buckles were once attached.
This is a rare and interesting box in nice overall condition. [ad] [ph:L]
