This carbine cartridge box is a used, original example It is constructed of black bridle leather and marked on the inner flap with “J. CUMMINGS SPRINGFIELD, MASS.” The interior features a drilled wooden block with the capacity to hold twenty paper cartridges or twenty .52 caliber, metallic rimfire cartridges.
When closed, the large leather outer flap and smaller inner flap protect the ammunition in the box. The outer flap has a mild scalloped front edge that bears a faint inspector’s mark which is obscured by crazing in that area. Stitched to the center edge of the main flap is a leather closure tab that is supple but split. All box stitching appears strong.
Inner flap has a smooth surface with both ears still in place. Small implement pouch is sewn to the front of the box and is in good condition but a bit stiff.
There are no roller buckles present on the bottom of the box.
Reverse of the box has belt loops only. [ad] [ph:L]
