This lovely early style cap pouch was ubiquitous among US infantry soldiers. Holding the essential percussion caps for the operation of the rifle or musket.
The exterior shows light crazing, but all leather is supple and intact with no cracking. The interior compartment includes the original hairs, intended to keep the caps from spilling out when the pouch is opened. Each of the belt attachment loops are secured by stitching, and the stitching of the body is very strong throughout. The brass finial closure attachment is untarnished. The leather dye has given to a nice shade of deep brown.
The interior of the flap is marked by the manufacturer as “W. C. McClellan & Co. Springfield, Mass.”
If you are looking add a cap pouch to your collection, this is an excellent candidate as an early war style, maker marked piece of US Civil War history. [cm][ph:L]
