This percussion cap pouch is in a nice condition, with light crazing on the outer flap near the folding point and on the belt loops. More finish wear is present on the outer tab, but no cracking is present.
The inner flap is strongly stamped “METZGER PHILA.” and prominently stamped “H.H. HARTZELL U.S. ORD. DEPT. SUB INSPECTOR”. The inner fleece hair – intended to stop the loose caps from falling out – is present and still firmly attached. Both ears or side flaps are still attached and all stitching is strong throughout. The belt attachment loops are firmly attached by stitching at the top and rivets at the bottom, which show some green tarnish. The brass closing finial is present and shines in a mellow hue.
The pouch’s finished bridle leather has faded to a rich, dark brown. The body of the pouch measures 3.5” at its widest point by 3.4” in length.
This is a very nice Federal cap pouch with desirable maker and sub inspector stampings. It would fit nicely into any Civil War accoutrement or memorabilia collection. [cm][ph:L]
