This English made cartridge box was run through to the blockaded South early in the war. It was made under Confederate direction by English contractor Alexander Ross. Major Edward Anderson CSA between July and September 1861 made arrangements to have Ross & Co of Mill Tannery, London provide the Confederacy with infantry accoutrements. On September 26th, 1861, Anderson reported the purchase of "over 10,000 Pounds Sterling" worth of Ross & Co goods. This completed order was sent to the Confederacy on the steamer Fingal October 1861. This British Pattern "Sergeants (of Guards)" box was part of this first shipment. It is stamped on the flap underside in front of the buff closing tab, "A ROSS & Co" over "C & M 1861". The excellent plus condition brown leather box has its original tin liners and measures 7 1/2 inches in length, 5 inches in height, 3 inches deep and the flap is 8 inches total length. These sergeants' boxes produced by Ross were made without side ears. They had buff leather slings. The Ross made goods are rarer than Isaac and Campbell products but like the former were exclusively made for the Confederacy. Beautiful condition. [pe] [ph:L]
