Offered here is a Confederate soldier’s accoutrement set consisting of a leather cap pouch, a cartridge box on a rarely offered "gunner’s" style waist belt that has been together for decades. The leather waist belt is a rare Confederate made example. This “gunner’s belt” is a simple belt with a roller buckle sewn in place over a leather tab. There are tooled lines along the edges of the belt. The leather is pliable with no breaks. The belt is 39 inches in length and is 2 inches wide. Although well-made it is not quite as well done as the Union equivalent. There are dozens of photographs of Confederate soldiers wearing this exact style belt.

Mounted at the rear area of the belt is a classic Confederate manufactured cartridge box. The box is original and not messed with. It is constructed like the US M1855 patterns with both a cross strap sewn into the upper reverse to form loops to secure a shoulder sling and buckles sewn on the bottom to fasten it, and also two vertical belt loops on the back for wear on a waist belt. Both the loops and the buckles are secured by stitching only, with no rivets, as is the latch tab. This box still uses the very practical and necessary inner flap with side ears to keep the ammunition dry. The outer flap also has a rather simple outline, with slightly rounded corners and scalloped lower edge and is very roughly finished on its inside. The flap dimensions are 8 inches by 8 inches. This box does have a separate tool pouch sewn to its front under the front flap. There is a lead finial. The tin liners are not in place, but the untouched condition of the box suggests they have been gone over a century. All stitches are tight and there are no losses or flaking of the leather. This box has provisions for an over the shoulder strap but as it now sits it is supported by the belt as worn by ideally riflemen but became general as the war progressed.
The leather Confederate made cap pouch is mounted on the right front area of the belt. Its superb condition matches the belt and the cartridge box. It has a single 2-inch-wide loop in back and a lead finial. There is the factory wool, and a good bit, still inside this cap pouch. This set was in one of the finest collections of Confederate material ever assembled. The back story is that it came from Devil's Den having been found immediately after the battle of Gettysburg. A wonderful set! [pe]
