Box was for carrying the .58 caliber rifle musket cartridge. Outer flap is in good condition. The leather is clean with some light wrinkling toward the lower corners from use. The box was “cut” (twice) to attach an oval “US” box plate which has been removed. The latch tab is unbroken and attached by one row of stitching.
Inner flap that covers the tins has both ears firmly attached and the leather surface is in smooth and very fine condition. An oval maker’s stamp is present: J.E. CONDICT / New York. The tins are present inside the box; dividers have been removed. Implement pocket is complete and shows evidence of use.
Bottom of the box has both roller buckles and a round brass finial. Reverse has both the sling and belt loops with the belt loops being riveted and sewn. Loops are in nice condition and also show "pull" from field use. “W.H.M.” is stamped between the belt loops.
This is a fine example of a Civil War infantry cartridge box. [jet][ph:L]
