This is a Civil War-era percussion cap pouch. The leather is clean and the whole piece is in good overall condition. The outer flap features an oval inspector’s stamp, “R. WHITE / U.S. / ORD. DEPT. / SUB-INSPECTOR”. This pattern has the integral closing tab as an extension of the outer flap.
The latch tab is unbroken. The interior flap has both inner “ears” remain firmly sewn in place. Flap stamped “S.H. YOUNG / & CO. / NEWARK / NJ” which is partially obscured due to some crazing and finish loss. No fleece remains; no nipple pick.
Bottom has brass finial. Both narrow belt loops remain in place on back and are stitched and riveted. All stitching is strong and intact. There is a faint letter “B” stamped between the belt loops.
A nice original Civil War cap pouch. [jet][ph:L]
