Pattern 1861 US cartridge box in fair condition. The outer flap was cut for a “US” box plate to be mounted in the center. It also features a second set of “cuts” to mount an Eagle breast plate. The latch-tab is stitched to the flap and remains worn, but whole and unbroken. Leather shows crazing and a few scuffs.
The inner flap is maker-marked (Smith, Bourne & Co) and retains the two side “ears” and they remain firmly stitched in place. The implement pouch is complete and very good.
There are no cartridge tins with this box. The bottom of the box features the typical brass finial and neither of the roller buckles (One is loose inside the box). All stitching remains strong. Belt loops attached to the back.
An early Civil War infantry cartridge box cut for two different plates. [jet][ph:L]
