This well-made brown/black leather carbine or possibly pistol box (compatible with the single shot Palmetto 1842 model pistol for example) is of Confederate manufacture. At first glance from the front it looks like a smaller version of the US Model 1861 Infantry cartridge box. Its flap measures 8 by 6 inches. The interior box is 6 1/2 inches by 4 inches and is 1 1/2 inches in depth.

Internally there is one metal tin divided into 3 compartments. Each compartment is 1 1 /2 inch by 2 inches and all, but the 3rd left one are 4 inches deep. The left compartment is 2 inches deep and at one time it was lined with leather of which a portion remains intact. The function of this compartment was to shield and hold loose cartridges while the other 2 longer un-insulated compartments held still wrapped cartridges that is in packages.

The box has 2 leather loops 3/4 of an inch wide on the reverse. These facilitated wearing on a belt. There is a brass finial and a 3 1/2-inch-long leather tab that makes closure possible. The box is all hand sewn. The condition is excellent with minor flaking. A very nice-looking cartridge box.  [pe][ph:L]
