This cartridge box is the "Pattern 1861", it was ornamented with a brass "US" boxplate. It has two inside flaps covering the tins and the front implement pouch. Belt straps are centered, sewn and riveted. Latch tab is sewn only, brass finial is round. Two iron buckles are sewn only. Box measures approximately 7” x 1 ¾” x 5” (for the .58 cal. elongated ball). Two tin inserts hold musket cartridges. A 2” wide shoulder belt, ornamented with a brass eagle breast plate, is attached through belt loops and buckled to bottom of box.
The brass cartridge box plate and eagle shoulder belt plate are in good condition and appear original to the piece. Belt loops intact, fastening tab intact, finial and buckles intact, tins intact, inside flap over the tins is intact, flap over the implement pouch intact, front flap intact, brass "US" plate is included, shoulder strap intact with brass shoulder plate included. Leather is flexible with no breaks. Shoulder belt, outer flap, and latch tab show moderate cracking in the finish. Minor flanking to finish on left edge of outer flap. Overall, this is a solid and attractive cartridge box and sling in extremely good condition. [jet][ph:L]
