The leather on this box is in first rate, museum quality condition. The outer flap and the body of the box are superb. The only visible wear on the outside of the box is on the belt loops on the back. These exhibit some light surface crackling. The rest of the box is perfect. Bottom has pear shaped finial and both roller buckles. Buckles have all their original finish. Inner flap is also excellent with strong maker’s mark at lower front center that reads “E. A. CROSSMAN & CO., NEWARK, N. J.” done in three lines in an oval. Interior has wood block with twenty drilled holes for cartridges. Implement pocket is excellent to match the rest of the box.
Edwin A. Crossman & Co. had contracts for 2,500 carbine cartridge boxes in 1864 and 1865. Their company name will also be found on Infantry accouterments. This is an outstanding 1st class example of the standard Union Cavalry carbine cartridge box. [ad] [ph:L]
