The pattern 1839 rifleman’s cartridge box was meant to be suspended from the waistbelt and was produced with vertical loops only on the reverse. The outer flap of the box has considerable scattered crazing over its surface. Despite this, the leather is in pliable condition and stable with no flacking. There is a small 3/4-inch tear on the bottom right on the front flap. Attached one time center was the small Pattern 1839 oval US plate; this is now missing. The curled, worn but complete latch tab is sewn to the underside of the flap by a single line of stitching. The bottom of the box has a round brass finial while the back of the box has two vertical belt loops. The interior flap has both ears and is marked with the maker’s mark: "H.A. DINGEE N-YORK" The tin for cartridges is not present on the inside. The Implement pocket is present with the proper latch tab but torn in a couple of places. Generally, it is in good condition but does show some surface dirt and light wear on the leather and just needs a light cleaning. [pe][ph:L]
