A no-doubt-about-it Confederate cap box made in the fashion of a standard issue Union cap box with a one-piece flap narrowing toward the bottom to form a latch tab that fastens over a pointed brass finial at the bottom front, fitted with two narrow vertical belt loops on the back, a shorter, inner flap with side-ears to help seal the pocket, and showing the strip of sheepskin sewn to the upper rear inside, which as usual saw its fleece long ago fall prey to moths. The finish shows crazing and flaking with rubs on the main flap and latch tab from flexing, but is present on inner flap, side ears, and back and belt loops. The inner flap and lower front show some scratches from use, including one on the lower front of the body forming a pointed oval, but there are no holes, tears or missing parts, the belt loops are secure, and the box is solid with the seams good and the stitching intact. The sewing shows some unevenness, which is a nice touch, and the tab shows a second fastening hole just above and to one side of the original hole, indicating the box was issued and carried, with the soldier putting in the second hole to tighten the close after extensive use and exposure to the elements. The rubbed portions show as brown. The finish shows as a brownish-black from oxidation and the dying process.

This would make a good addition to a Confederate accoutrement display or one focused on any branch of service since percussion caps were necessary for any percussion long arm or pistol. It would also fit a collection concentrating specifically on Confederate cap boxes, which show an amazing variety in style and construction. As always, please see our photos. [sr] [ph:L]
