This carbine cartridge box is an original example of the classic leather accoutrement carried by mounted forces during the Civil War.
This specimen is constructed of strong, black bridle leather. When closed, the large leather outer flap and smaller inner flap protect the ammunition in the carbine box. The drilled wood cartridge block is present. The strong outer flap has a mild scalloped front edge. Leather is good with light crazing and shows honest use. Stitched and riveted to the outer flap is a closure tab that is present but broken at the hole.
Inner flap retains both “ears”. Inner flap closes over a small implement pouch sewn to the front of the box. The box is unmarked. Bottom of box has a brass finial. The two black japanned roller buckles remain in place. On the box’s back side there two of the vertical, leather belt loops (one broken) with a single horizontal leather strap. The stitching is strong and tight overall.
A nice example of a Civil War carbine cartridge box that saw some actual use. [jet][ph:L]
