This carbine cartridge box is an original example of the classic leather accoutrement carried by mounted forces during the Civil War.
This specimen is constructed of strong, black bridle leather. When closed, the large leather outer flap and smaller inner flap protect the ammunition in the carbine box. The drilled wood cartridge block is present. The strong outer flap has a mild scalloped front edge. Leather is good with light crazing and some scuffing. Stitched and riveted to the outer flap is a closure tab that is present and unbroken.
Inner flap retains both “ears”. Inner flap closes over a small implement pouch sewn to the front of the box. The box is marked “DINGEE & LORIGAN”. Bottom of box has a brass finial. The two black japanned roller buckles remain in place. On the box’s back side the two vertical, leather belt loops have been intentionally removed. The single horizontal leather strap remains. The stitching is strong and tight overall.
A nice example of a Civil War carbine cartridge box. [jet][ph:L]
