This Confederate cap box has just about everything you look for in this essential piece of Confederate gear: the flap is square cut, with a simple, narrow impressed border line as decoration, and has a separate latch tab secured by a single, straight line of stitching across the lower front; the fastening stud is lead/pewter, the Confederate alternative to the U.S. brass finials; and, the single, wide leather belt on the rear, also showing a impressed line along the edges, is a labor-saving alternative to the two narrow belt loops on Union cap boxes, secured along the bottom edge by the same line of stitching that secures the back to the body of the box.
The box has clearly seen use in the field. The outer flap shows rubbing and loss of finish from flexing, with crazing to the surface and rough edges. The latch tab is present, but has lost most of its finish from flexing. The belt loop on the back is there, and the finish largely intact, but has some edge losses and has lost the stitching along the top. The body of the box shows crazing and finish loss as well and the stitching securing the back to the body of the box has given way on one side. The inner flap and side ears are there, with the latter, like the outer flap, showing losses along the edges. There was likely a strip of fleece inside to prevent the caps from bouncing out if the flap was unlatched, but as with most Civil War cap boxes, northern or southern, it became moth food a long time ago.
Please see our photos. Despite the rough condition, this is a scarce piece of field gear, undeniably Confederate, showing construction that might have been somewhat crude by comparison to its northern cousins, but that got the job done, done quickly, and was completely functional and adequate to its purpose.
