This is a very strong example of the regulation cap box for the percussion cap primers used on the majority of Civil War weapons. The box is complete, all original,  and in excellent condition. The black finish is very good. The seams are tight. Inner and outer flaps are firmly in place, as are the side ears on the inner flap, and both belt loops are in place on the reverse. Inside the box the wire vent pick, used to clean debris from the nipple and vent and usually missing, is even in place, as is the strip of sheepskin fleece used to keep the percussion caps from being jostled out.

The maker’s stamp on the lower edge of the inner flap in a pointed oval cartouche reads, “H.G. HAEDRICH / PHILADA.” Henry G. Haedrich was a Philadelphia/Quakertown harness-maker and saddler who had numerous U.S. contracts for leather gear from 1861 through 1865, including for 10,000 sets each of .58 caliber and .69 caliber accoutrements in 1862, 20,000 sets of accoutrements under the July 1864 offer of contracts, etc. This pattern of cap box, with integral  latch to the shield-shaped front was introduced in 1862. The latch tab bears a bold inspector’s stamp reading, “M. LUTZ / U.S. / ORD.DEPT./ SUBINSPECTOR,” which Paul Johnson dates to the 1864 call for bids.

We see just some slight wear to the edge of the outer flap at upper left, a few lines of crazing on the inner flap and one belt loop from flexing, some wear to the latchtab hole from fastening and unfastening, and some thin green verdigris on the belt loop rivets. This a key piece of Civil War field gear, and one that would have been instantly recognized by any veteran. This would make a great addition to an accoutrement display for any branch of service, or even a specialized collection of cap boxes, which show a wide variety of patterns, construction techniques, maker and inspector marks.  [sr] [ph:L]
