This is a nice example of a New York State issue percussion cap pouch. In good condition, this pouch looks much like its Confederate counterpart. The whole pouch is constructed of leather which has been heavily tarred. The latch tab is sewn to the flap and remains firmly in place. There is minor crazing to the finish on the belt loop and body. The finial is brass. The single belt loop is of thin leather and 1 ½ inch wide. This is a definite Confederate characteristic but used on cap boxes issued to early war New York units like the famous 7th. There is no inner flap. And the side "ears" are missing. There is no original lamb’s wool inside, but some loose wool has been stuffed in the pouch. The leather is slightly stiff. All stitching is complete and tight. This looks for all the world like a classic Confederate percussion cap box, but it is early war New York state manufacture; never-the-less it is rare. [pe] [ph:L]
